How much regret did i have in the last dream by Wang Guowei

English Translation

How much regret did i have in the last dream?

tender voices of the carriage and horse,

we were so close.

Suddenly i found i pined for your love so crazy,

you walked to me and patted my head.

The thunder in the dream has died away,

sweet kiss of the wind and rain,

we were so immersed.

Suddenly i found the candle is gonna burn out,

only my yearning to you still sobbed before the dawn.

Wang Guowei: 王 国 维 (AD1877-1927),the master of Chinese poetry theory. He wrote a book"Poetic Remarks on the Human World"(《人间词 话 》 ),it's an epoch-making theory to Chinese poetry. He thought the important thing in a poem is the “realm"(境界).Your realm decides the quality of your poems.

Why Chinese poems is so special?
The most distinctive features of Chinese poetry are: concision- many poems are only four lines, and few are much longer than eight; ambiguity- number, tense and parts of speech are often undetermined, creating particularly rich interpretative possibilities; and structure- most poems follow quite strict formal patterns which have beauty in themselves as well as highlighting meaningful contrasts.
How to read a Chinese poem?
Like an English poem, but more so. Everything is there for a reason, so try to find that reason. Think about all the possible connotations, and be aware of the different possibilities of number and tense. Look for contrasts: within lines, between the lines of each couplet and between successive couplets. Above all, don't worry about what the poet meant- find your meaning.
