Liu Yuxi (刘禹锡)

In the illustrious pantheon of Tang Dynasty literature, Liu Yuxi stands out as the ultimate survivor and the unwavering optimist. Crowned the "Poetic Hero" (诗豪) by his contemporary Bai Juyi, Liu was a brilliant statesman who participated in the failed Yongzhen political reforms. As punishment, he was banished to the harsh, remote southern frontiers for over two decades. Yet, while other exiled officials drowned in sorrow, Liu Yuxi thrived.

He refused to be broken. Instead of writing self-pitying elegies, he immersed himself in the local culture, transforming indigenous folk tunes into the vibrant and enduring "Bamboo Branch Songs" (竹枝词). When he wasn't writing lively folk poetry, he composed some of Chinese history's most profound and chilling laments on the rise and fall of empires, particularly his verses on the ancient capital of Jinling (Nanjing). Armed with a rapier-like wit, an unbreakable spirit, and a radically optimistic worldview, Liu Yuxi’s poetry remains a testament to the triumph of the human spirit over political adversity.
