Quiet girl
- Poetry of Pre-Qin Poetry

《静女》

English Rendering

The girl was so quiet,

shyly asked me out.

Hid in the bush, coy to confess,

i walked here and there, nowhere found her.

The girl was so gorgeous,

secretly gave me a rose.

Rose was red as her blushing face,

i really loved that dreamy colour.

She plucked the herbs from the forest,

left me a beautiful love story.

I still treasure those herbs,so merry,

always make me miss her sweet.

Original Text (中文原文)

静女其姝,俟我于城隅。

爱而不见,搔首踟蹰。

静女其娈,贻我彤管。

彤管有炜,说怿女美。

自牧归荑,洵美且异。

匪女之为美,美人之贻。

Reader's Companion

The Essence of the Verse

Classical Chinese poetry thrives on Concision and Ambiguity. Without tense or number, the words create a timeless space where the reader becomes the co-creator of the poem's meaning.

Reading Between the Lines

Look for Contrasts: light and shadow, movement and stillness. Don't just translate the words; feel the Yijing (artistic conception) that lingers long after the last character.
