If Love Could Stay in the Day We Firstly Met
- Poetry of Nalan Xingde

《木兰花·拟古决绝词柬友》

English Rendering

If love could stay in the day we firstly met,

maybe i wouldn't languish for your sweet love.

The time changed us both with the hurt,

but you said it's only me who changed the mind.

The Emperor promised his concubine love forever,

under pear tree it was all bubble, but at least they loved.

How could you compare yourself with the Emperor?

you promised nothing but i still waited for you spoonily.

Original Text (中文原文)

人生若只如初见,何事秋风悲画扇。

等闲变却故人心,却道故人心易变。

骊山语罢清宵半,泪雨霖铃终不怨。

何如薄幸锦衣郎,比翼连枝当日愿。

Reader's Companion

The Essence of the Verse

Classical Chinese poetry thrives on Concision and Ambiguity. Without tense or number, the words create a timeless space where the reader becomes the co-creator of the poem's meaning.

Reading Between the Lines

Look for Contrasts: light and shadow, movement and stillness. Don't just translate the words; feel the Yijing (artistic conception) that lingers long after the last character.
