In the dream
- Poetry of Yan Jidao

《临江仙》

English Rendering

In the dream, the red door of your home was closed.

after i woke up,beady curtains cover the scenery outside.

but i still remember how it looked at the day you left.

Stand alone i in the fallen cherry flowers,

fly both swallows in the misty spring rain.

Recall to the first date with you under the cherry tree,

you wore a blue shirt with a heart-shaped picture.

Now i play the lyre to confess how i feel about you.

That year, the bright moonshine and you came here,

until now,i still yearn the shadow of yours under the moonshine.

Original Text (中文原文)

梦后楼台高锁,酒醒帘幕低垂。

去年春恨却来时。

落花人独立,微雨燕双飞。

记得小蘋初见,两重心字罗衣。

琵琶弦上说相思。

当时明月在,曾照彩云归。

Reader's Companion

The Essence of the Verse

Classical Chinese poetry thrives on Concision and Ambiguity. Without tense or number, the words create a timeless space where the reader becomes the co-creator of the poem's meaning.

Reading Between the Lines

Look for Contrasts: light and shadow, movement and stillness. Don't just translate the words; feel the Yijing (artistic conception) that lingers long after the last character.
